Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of southern marine science and Engineering (Guangzhou) (hereinafter referred to as Guangzhou Marine Laboratory) is sponsored by Guangzhou municipal government. The main co construction units are Nanhai Ecological Environment Engineering Innovation Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey.

Guangzhou Marine Laboratory will "base itself on the bay area, deeply cultivate the South China Sea and cross the deep blue", focus on the core scientific issues of "the formation and evolution of the marginal sea of the South China Sea and its resource and environmental effects", strive to solve key core scientific and technological problems such as sustainable development of islands and reefs, sustainable utilization of resources and sustainable ecological development in Dawan District, and layout according to the pattern of "8 + 7 + 6 + 5", Focus on 8 frontier basic research directions of marine science, develop 7 marine high-tech R & D directions, build 6 innovation support platforms, and build 5 industrial incubation centers. Cultivate and introduce excellent talent teams. By 2021, it is planned to build 45 high-level core teams with a total number of 1000 people.
