From July 5 to 6, 2025, the 1st International Symposium on Ship and Ocean Engineering Equipment & the 3rd Symposium on Latest Advances in Marine Land Development Technology(Nansha) was held in Nansha, the core city in GBA. The event was jointly organized by Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory(Guangzhou)(hereinafter referred to as "GML") and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(hereinafter referred to as "HKUST(GZ)"). Over 400 participants attended the symposium, including Professor Mingxuan Ni, President of HKUST(GZ), Academician Si Zhang, Director of GML, Mr. Jiabing Zhang, Member of the Standing Committee and Director of the Organization Department of Nansha, as well as academicians, experts, engineering and industry leaders, and government representatives from countries such as the United Kingdom, Singapore, the Netherlands, and South Korea. Academician Zhang Si delivered a keynote speech entitled "Cold Seep Research Facility and International Mega-Science Program".

The unveiling ceremony of the International Ocean Industry Development Alliance (Nansha) was a core highlight of the symposium. Professor Mingxuan Ni, Academician Si Zhang, and Ms. Youying Zhou, Vice Chairman of Guangdong Association for Science and Technology and Deputy Director-General and Secretary-General of GBA Engineers Consortium, jointly unveiled the alliance. The establishment of the alliance aims to expand Nansha's marine industry cooperation network, provide intellectual support for exploring new formats and models of industrial transformation and upgrading, and promote industrial cooperation.

On the second day of the symposium, the first council meeting of the International Ocean Industry Development Alliance (Nansha) was held, with more than 50 member units in attendance. The conference elected the first council members of the alliance. HKUST(GZ) was elected as the first chairman unit, and GML was elected as the vice-chairman unit. Professor Huayong Yang, Secretary of the Party General Branch of GML and leader of the Marine Intelligent Equipment Research Team, attended the council meeting on behalf of GML. Professor Yang stated that he would lead GML’s research team to collaborate with alliance members in building a collaborative innovation system for marine science and technology in GBA and promoting the integrated development of education, science and technology, and industrial talents, striving to make greater contributions.
