From January 12 to 17, 2025, the 17th Deep-sea Biology Symposium(DSBS) jointly organized by Southern Marine Science and Engineering Guangdong Laboratory(Guangzhou)(hereinafter referred to as "GML") and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(hereinafter referred to as "HKUST") was successfully held in HKUST. This is the first time that DSBS has been held in Asia since its establishment in 1977, marking an important milestone for the deep-sea biology community in Asia. Over 30 marine scientists from the world's top oceanographic institutes were invited to give keynote speeches and featured reports, with nearly 400 scholars from over 30 countries and regions attending.
At the opening ceremony, Academician Zhang Si, Director of the GML, Academician Ye Yuru, President of HKUST, and Dr. Michelle Taylor, Chairman of the Deep-Sea Biology Society, delivered welcome speeches. Academician Zhang Si introduced the history and vision of GML, and encouraged participants to share scientific research achievements and build collaborative networks to jointly promote the sustainable development of deep-sea organisms and ecosystems.
In response to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), Academician Zhang Si and Professor Qian Peiyuan, Director of the Hong Kong Branch of GML, proposed the ‘UN Ocean Decade Programme Global Climate Impacts of Methane Seeps’.During the meeting, Professor Qian Peiyuan presided over the Special Meeting of "UN Ocean Decade Programme Global CliMetS". More than 40 experts in the cold seep field from different countries and researcher Yang Yang, representative of GML, attended the meeting. Participants engaged in heated discussions on the focus, vision, implementation plan, management structure, and international cooperation mechanisms of the ‘UN Ocean Decade Programme Global CliMetS’.
